Compliance Legal Counsel and Project Manager
Role Introduction
Reports to: Head of Compliance
The Group Legal and Compliance (GLC) department provides the Group with sound and pragmatic advice on legal issues. Our team handles a range of commercial, corporate, employment law, data privacy, competition law and regulatory matters. We handle litigation and regulatory and investigations which involve the Group. We also develop and implement Cathay’s compliance policies and programmes, including competition, anti-bribery, sanctions and data privacy.
As the Compliance Legal Counsel and Project Manager, you will provide comprehensive compliance and project management support to the Group Legal and Compliance department. This role involves support to the Corporate & Compliance team on the implementation and improvement of a multi-faceted third-party risks programme, responsible for safeguarding the Group against a broad spectrum of legal risks exposures.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the Associate General Counsel and Head of Compliance in leading the development, implementation and management of the third party-risks programme
- Review programme performance, identify measurement metrics, and analyse trends and areas for improvement
- Enhance due diligence questionnaires architecture to realise a risk-based approach, focused on capturing key corporate risks
- Organise and improve the conduct of multi-layered legal assessments across a range of risk areas, such as corporate, licensing, consumer, sanctions/trade, supply chain, sustainability, data privacy and IT security, together with relevant subject matter experts
- Review and coordinate with the Compliance Manager and other risk domain representatives to establish an effective risk-tiering scheme
- Gather and facilitate the prioritisation of functional as well as technical requirements/enhancements and questions from key stakeholders
- Drive and coordinate project management activities across business departments, risk domain owners, IT, service providers, process leads and management groups. Standardise project groups, material and communications
- Assemble working groups and guide negotiations between stakeholder groups to achieve alignment. Drive and manage supplier escalations process to facilitate prioritisation and remediation of known issues
- Oversee regular reporting and preparation of related materials by relevant parties
- Develop guidance material and coordinate training to increase transparency and simplify processes
Requirements
- Preference of at least 10 years of post-qualification experience as a qualified lawyer in Hong Kong or other internationally recognised jurisdictions, with at least 8 years’ experience specialising in regulatory or compliance in multinational organisations
- Technically strong and able to advise on or facilitate legal risk assessments on a diverse range of legal and regulatory compliance matters
- Knowledge of third-party due diligence programmes and related experience
- A mature and responsible communicator with strong analytical skills, who is able to work independently and solve problems proactively. Highly organised with strong planning and project management skills
- Good command of spoken and written English and Chinese (Cantonese). Knowledge of Mandarin is a plus
