IT Practice Lead - FinOps
Role Introduction
Reports to: Platform Ops Manager
The IT Practice Lead - FinOps is responsible for driving financial operations excellence within the organization. This role focuses on optimizing cloud financial management practices, ensuring cost efficiency, and maximizing the value of cloud investments. The IT Practice Lead - FinOps collaborates with cross-functional teams to implement best practices, develop financial strategies, and provide insights to support informed decision-making. This position plays a critical role in aligning financial goals with business objectives, fostering a culture of accountability, and promoting continuous improvement in financial operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and continuous improvement of FinOps methodologies, frameworks, processes, and toolsets. This includes managing the change introduced by ongoing enhancements to ensure adoption and effectiveness across teams.
- Identify best practices and innovations from both internal and external sources, and propose how these can be adapted and implemented within the Cathay environment to enhance FinOps maturity and delivery outcomes.
- Monitor the execution of FinOps practices and gather feedback through various channels. Define and drive the FinOps Quality Management Framework, covering key pillars such as cost transparency, cost awareness, cost optimization, governance, and lessons learned.
- Provide coaching, advisory, and consulting support to practitioners and teams in line with the FinOps Practice Engagement Model. This includes guiding teams through practice adoption and helping them apply FinOps principles effectively.
- Train FinOps Champions in relevant methodologies, frameworks, processes, and tools to increase their effectiveness and productivity. Empower them to promote practices and gather feedback for continuous improvement.
- Represent FinOps practices in recruitment processes for related roles, evaluating candidates based on competency and alignment with practice-specific criteria to ensure quality hires.
- Align and integrate FinOps methodologies, processes, and toolsets with other IT practices, Planning & Governance teams, and EPMO processes. Manage internal communications channels and facilitate practice meetings to ensure consistent messaging and collaboration.
- Maintain the FinOps practice content repository, ensuring all materials are accurate, relevant, and up-to-date to support knowledge sharing and consistent practice execution.
- Facilitate in-house capability development through training needs analysis, coaching, and skill uplift programs. These initiatives aim to close gaps and enhance both technical and business FinOps knowledge across IT teams.
- Oversee the IT Graduate Trainee and Internship Programme, including annual recruitment, marketing campaigns, competency-based assessments, onboarding events, rotation planning, and ongoing coaching to nurture future FinOps talent.
Requirements
General Requirements:
- Minimum 6 years of hands-on experience in the relevant practice and at least 10 years of overall IT experience, with solid knowledge of end-to-end project delivery, system lifecycles, and methodologies; vendor management experience is a plus.
- Degree qualifications in Computer Science, Information Systems or related disciplines.
- Strong understanding of FinOps principles and practices, including cloud cost management, budgeting, and financial forecasting.
- Experience designing and implementing cost optimization strategies for cloud services.
- Familiarity with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, Azure, AliCloud and Google Cloud Platform. Experience with financial management tools and platforms.
- Proven ability to coach, consult, and advise individuals and teams effectively, with demonstrated experience in designing and delivering training sessions on practice-relevant topics.
- Strong leadership and influence skills, with practical experience in change management and the ability to inspire and motivate teams toward shared goals.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with a focus on process improvement and the ability to critically evaluate information from multiple sources.
- Exceptional communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage professionally across diverse stakeholder groups and manage relationships effectively.
- Keeps up-to-date with industry trends, findings, and reports relevant to the practice area, ensuring continuous growth in both general technical competencies and specialization
