Role Introduction

To ensure all Industrial and Employee Relations align with the business needs and implement solutions that ensure compliance to our employment obligations. This role is responsible for defining and implementing a robust governance framework ensuring all associated strategy, policy and agreements connected with industrial and employee relations across the region are actively managed in a fair and compliant way. Also responsible for supporting local leaders and contributing to strategic projects, defining, and implementing locally relevant solutions including policy redesign and change management.

 

Key Responsibilities

Industrial relations and union negotiations

• Capable of understanding and providing advice on the content of Collective Agreements, Employment contracts, Workplace Policies and relevant employment legislation.

• Take a supportive role in negotiations to renew and re-negotiate key agreements including salary increments and Collective Agreements ahead of renewal.

• Proactively and progressively apply the industrial agreements to ensure compliance.

• Engage with local representative groups and unions.

• Monitor Industrial Relations law changes and provide such updates to Regional Policy ER/IR Manager.

Employee Relations and Strategy

• With the support of Regional Policy ER/IR Manager employment law related queries or cases that arise with expertise and engage in legal support in an effective manner.

• Advise the Regional Policy ER/IR Manager on areas of legal risk and recommend the best course of action to resolve in a timely manner.

• With the support of Regional Policy ER/IR Manager proactively manage the risk of potential legal issues and work with Area/ Country Heads to resolve any issues or disputes.

• Support Area Head & Area PPL to maintain productive ongoing relationships with employees.

• Partner with the Regional Policy ER/IR Manager and Area/Country PPL to monitor employment law changes within the region and ensure readiness to adapt and that opportunities are maximised within legislative constraints.

• Support to ensure that Cathay has engaged competent local labour law experts and is utilising their services effectively in each country as required.

Governance and Compliance

• Support to ensure regular audit of key processes and policies for compliance and conduct audits, identifying local risks.

• Support Regional Policy ER/IR Manager and Area Managers to ensure policies and practices are locally appropriate and meet all regulatory and compliance needs across relevant contracts, agreements, and local legislation.

• Drive consistency in application of People policies and contracts including implementing standard terms and conditions, improving contracts to reflect best practices globally

Policy Development and Communication

• Support Regional Policy ER/IR Manager to ensure global people policies are implemented in an appropriate local manner and local policies are defined/refined to be market specific.

• Work with local stakeholders as appropriate to ensure policies for the local environment are understood and are fit for purpose.

• Stays up to date and continuously develops expertise in all industrial agreements and employment relations standards across the region.

Occupational Health and Safety

• Partner with GSORM and Regional Policy ER/IR Manager to proactively establish a safety culture which ensures our people’s safety at work is top of mind for all employees and is prioritised across the region.

• Advise on all local and regional health and safety legislation, practices and evolving trends

• Support to establish and embed protocols and guidance to meet local Occupational Health and Safety requirements.

• Utilise GSORM health and safety policies and guidelines to achieve effective implementation locally to meet both company expectations and local legislation

• Ensure all necessary health and safety reporting occurs as required regulations is conducted in a timely manner

Other

• Any other reasonable task as requested including actively supporting the Regional Policy ER/IR Manager in projects and/or ad hoc matters

 

Requirements

Academic Qualification

• Degree qualification in human resources, law, or similar field or relevant experience in employment and industrial relations

Knowledge, Skills, Training and Experience

• At least 5 years’ Human Resource/Employee Relations experience in a complex matrix organisation

• Solid expertise of employment law across SEA countries

• Successful track record of negotiation experience with unions and employee

representative groups

• Ability to manage or provide support in a range of complex employment relations matters including performance management, disciplinary matters and CA interpretation.

• Strong written and oral communication and interpersonal skills

• Drives results to execute processes effectively

• Demonstrated ability to work in a highly matrix environment and engage key stakeholders

• Strong risk assessment, analytical and problem solving skills

• Growth mindset with demonstrated process improvement capabilities

• Demonstrable ability to positively engage with stakeholders and drive outcomes

• High levels of diplomacy and discretion

• The ability to work autonomously, but also be a strong team contributor.
