Role Introduction

Reports To: Head of Sustainable Development

This position advocates for and promotes sustainable development within Cathay Pacific Group. The job holder will be accountable for the sustainable development strategy for the airline, including but not limited to, environmental, social and community targets, initiatives identification, and getting other business units and external partners involved to deliver results. He / She will also be accountable for ensuring our compliance with any relevant local and international regulatory requirements, in conjunction with relevant stakeholders or owners across the business and for producing relevant reports or publications. He / She will represent Cathay Pacific Group in international events or relevant task forces related to sustainability. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Cathay Pacific Group’s Sustainable Development (SD) strategy
  • Ensure our compliance with any relevant local and international regulatory requirements regarding environment and sustainable development.
  • Represent Cathay Pacific Group in international and industry sustainable development or environmental affairs events, forums, committees or task forces.
  • Provide thought leadership and alert related business units to prepare in advance for upcoming SD issues.
  • Initiate SD activities in conjunction with relevant internal teams and external stakeholders.
  • Provide a source of technical expertise and advice to line departments within the business to address their own sustainability challenges and commitments.
  • Ensure required SD data is identified, collated, analysed and reported.
  • Produce Cathay Pacific Group’s Sustainable Development Report and literature in accordance with Hong Kong and international requirements and best practices.
  • To engage government bodies, non-profit organizations, activist groups and media on our sustainable development initiatives.
  • Advocate sustainable development within the Cathay Pacific Group.
  • Consult with, advise and work with various business units to ensure sustainability considerations are built in as part of on-going business practices.
  • Work closely with the Corporate Affairs team on issues handling and Marketing Communications teams for proper storytelling.
  • Support the wider sustainability objectives of the Swire Group.

  • A minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in the environmental or sustainable development field, preferably with exposure in plastic, material and waste area (previous knowledge and experience within the aviation industry would be a distinct advantage).
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, preferably in Environmental Management, Life / Earth Sciences or closely related disciplines.
  • Excellent communications skills, both written and oral, including the ability to produce and deliver professional presentations.
  • Well-versed in Hong Kong and international environmental laws and regulatory processes (e.g. Environmental Impact Assessment, noise regulations). A passionate and interest in sustainable development, environmental protection and the aviation industry, and committed to make a difference.
  • Strong knowledge and expertise in environmental and sustainability issues.
  • Well connected with relevant major charities, non-profit organisations, activist groups on environmental issues.
  • Strong sense of and proactive alertness to potential environmental and sustainable development issues. A good communicator, able to champion sustainability causes within the company successfully, and to convey and protect the company’s position externally.
  • Excellent planning, organizing, and influencing skills
  • Fluent in spoken English and Cantonese, good written English and written Chinese. Mandarin is a plus.
