Role Introduction

Reports to: Regional Head of People, Northeast Asia / Regional General Manager, Northeast Asia
Location / Country: Tokyo / Japan
Employment Condition: Permanent

We are looking for a dynamic People Manager to lead a dedicated team of five who in turn support 300 employees across 6 ports in Japan. While some hands-on HR operational work is required, the successful candidate is expected to provide strategic business partnership for all departments, will be a key member of the regional people team and take a contributive role in continually improving the employee experience, HR operations and compliance.

Deliver Core People Processes and Business Partnering

  • Guide managers to make sound and thoughtful people decisions balanced with organisational needs
  • Maintain the country organisational structure and have oversight of all people replacements
  • Lead compensation processes ensuring that strong controls are in place
  • Ensure full compliance and governance on all aspects of employment law, health and safety and payroll processes
  • Design or localise people policies effectively and communicate accordingly
  • Manage challenging people issues including employee exits, disciplinary or grievance cases
  • Establish the employee relations strategy to ensure employee representative groups are well managed and identify opportunities for engagement
  • Improve the industrial agreements to meet the needs of all parties, ensure effective bargaining and lead the negotiation process

Build a High Performance Culture

  • Be directly involved in selection decisions of mid to senior roles and ensure recruitment is managed well to attract the right talent
  • Own the performance management process and its effectiveness to build capability of the line managers on performance improvement plans and coaching
  • Manage the annual calibration process to ensure a clear link to performance related pay

People Development, Engagement and Performance Management

  • Utilise leadership development materials to deliver local leadership development activities
  • Oversee succession and ensure plans are in place to assess flight risks and retention initiatives
  • Drive reward and recognition programmes
  • Lead own team to success including leading by example in accordance with Cathay’s core values

Stakeholder management and collaboration

  • Lead the country people strategy to deliver a progressively improving employee experience and to provide stronger HR support
  • Contribute to the regional people projects and be an active member of the regional people community

Business Continuity

  • Be a key leader in the event of crisis management for Cathay
  • Implement key processes for business continuity of people processes and associated support mechanisms

  • Degree in Human Resources or a closely related discipline
  • 7+ years’ experience in a generalist HR Business Partner role
  • Practical expertise in all areas of Human Resources including compliance
  • Experience of working in a multi-national organisation
  • Approachable and with a demonstrable customer centric orientation
  • Demonstrable ability to manage competing priorities
  • High level of integrity and professionalism
  • Experience in leading a team to success
  • Demonstrably strong mediation, conflict management, influencing and negotiation skills
  • Experience in managing complexity across geographies and hierarchies
  • Effective communications skills across multiple channels
  • Future focused approach and proven ability to drive positive sustainable change and produce outcomes
  • Excellence in written and spoken Japanese and English
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in Japan

  • Basic salary: JPY718,620/month
  • Title allowance: JPY100,000/month
  • Fixed allowance per month: JPY38,000 + Basic salary x 7.4%
  • Other allowances: the company regulations apply
  • Social insurance: Unemployment insurance, Worker's compensation insurance, Health insurance, Welfare pension insurance
  • Commuting expense allowance: Up to JPY50,000/month
  • Retirement allowance: None
  • Working hours per day: 7.5 hours
  • Break time: 1 hour
  • Off day: Two days off every week
  • Probation period: 3 months
  • Annual leave: 16 days in the first year after completing 6 month service
  • Potential for additional discretional bonus (depending on the Company's performance and financial status)
