People Manager - BP and Engagement

To create and sustain an engaged employee base and to establish a high performance culture mind-set across all functions within the region.  This includes proactively partnering with line managers to ensure they have the necessary Human Resource support to drive the achievement of broader business and functional goals.

Key responsibilities and tasks:

High Performance Culture

  • Lead all efforts on performance management and its effectiveness
  • Build capability for performance management within the line management teams
  • Proactively support line managers with performance improvement plans and provide coaching and formal performance management support as required
  • Leverage centrally provided people frameworks and strategies to provide tools, guidelines and training to the People Specialists to support local teams
  • Support line managers through alignment and consistency of performance management and manage the annual calibration process ensuring a clear link to any pay increments at year end
  • Conduct exit interviews with senior or regretted losses and analyse exit interview and turnover data on a regular basis to identify trends and issues for resolution 


  • Develop and execute a Regional Engagement Plan that suits the business culture and needs including links to global engagement programmes, events and initiatives
  • Partner with the global engagement teams and community to suggest ideas and best practices and provide feedback on how global initiatives fit into local context
  • Contribute to global communication and engagement activities to ensure they are fit for purpose for the local market
  • Drive Work Well Done campaigns and Niki and Betsy nominations across the region
  • Develop and implement recognition programmes to local requirements
  • Promote and nurture a strong customer service mind-set and culture across all teams

Employee Relations

  • Implement a regional employee relations strategy to ensure all employee representative groups are well managed and identify opportunities for further engagement with our employees via various channels 
  • Monitor Industrial Relations law changes to ensure Cathay is ready to adapt
  • Monitor Industrial Relations trends and developments and proactively respond to these including potential formation of new employee representative groups 
  • Ensure that Cathay has engaged competent local labour law experts and is utilising their services effectively as required

Legal Support and Case Management

  • Work with the global legal team and seek advice on complex legal cases as required
  • Manage the selection, quality of service provision and cost of labour law suppliers 
  • Manage all employment law related queries or cases that arise with expertise in engaging legal supportive in an effective manner
  • Advise the Regional Head of People on areas of legal risk and recommend the best course of action in order to resolve 
  • Proactively manage risk of potential legal issues working with Area Managers
  • Monitor employment law changes within the region and ensure Cathay is ready to adapt and can maximise the opportunities within legislative constraints

People Development and Performance Management

  • Lead, support and encourage own team to achieve success
  • Demonstrate leadership and lead by example in accordance with Cathay’s core values
  • Maintain active and ongoing dialogue in relation to employee goals and individual performance
  • Actively engage with employees to enhance communication and their understanding of department goals
  • Enhance the employee experience in line with the role level and the internal brand promise

Qualifications / Experience:

Academic qualifications

  • A degree in Human Resources or in an equivalent discipline
  • A degree in law is an advantage

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • At least 7 years’ experience in a complex matrix organisation
  • Practical experience in successful business partnerships
  • Working knowledge of employment law within the region
  • Experience in interacting with legal counsel and effectively managing supplier relationships
  • Strategic thinker with a proven ability to drive improvements
  • Strong cultural sensitivity and cross cultural communications
  • Demonstrably strong communication and facilitation skills
  • High energy and motivational style
  • Confident in conducting engagement events
  • Ability to positively influence individuals and teams
  • Superior relationship builder
  • Travelling within the region is required
  • PRC national register or holding PRC ID
